Elma District and Curriculum
Residents of the Town of Elma obtain K-12 education through the Iroquois Central School District (ICSD). The ICSD curriculum adheres to New York State Education Department (NYSED) standards and recommendations. With the adoption of the Common Core State Standards (CCSS), the NYSED has worked toward curricular unification, particularly in the English language arts and mathematics. The ICSD has designed its own curriculum to meet the CCSS, in accordance with state guidance, and strives to enhance literacy in all subjects.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Elma District Curriculum
The primary and intermediate curriculum consists of instruction in general academics. Students receive a foundational education to prepare them for secondary coursework. Subjects for K-8 include English language arts, mathematics, social studies, science, music, art, and physical education. Students in 6th through 8th grade also have access to courses in life skills, computers, foreign languages, and technology. The music program at the middle school level includes chorus and orchestra.
Students who attend Iroquois High School (IHS) attend courses in the same subjects as middle school students, except their coursework and instruction are more specialized. Their music program is quite comprehensive, as students have access to numerous individualized programs. IHS also offers drivers education, business, health, and career and technical courses. Students have many opportunities to prepare for post-secondary studies through the school’s Honors and Advanced Placement (AP) program.

- Iroquois High Helps Shelter Those Affected by Storm - The snowstorm in Buffalo, and surrounding areas, has been historic. The state has set up many shelters throughout the region, including one at Iroquois High School. The building and members of The Red Cross are prepared to aid any person in need.
- Iroquois School Harbors Emergency Pet Supplies - The Iroquois Intermediate/Middle School has been set up as an emergency pet supply storage facility for those affected by the recent snowstorms, and now flooding, in the Buffalo area. Supplies include cages, crates, food, litter, litter boxes, and dishes.
- Seniors Attend Career and Technical Conference - The Western New York Chamber Alliance offered students interested in Career and Technical Education (CTE) a chance to network with others through a CTE conference at Moog. Many students were in attendance, as well as state officials and technical business representatives.

Many opportunities exist for students interested in technical careers. Examples of technical fields of study include healthcare, computers, various technologies, culinary arts, and many more. These careers do not require four-years of traditional college coursework. Instead, many technical colleges offer certificates and associate’s degrees. Of course, students who require more training can transfer credits to a four-year program. The advantages of attending technical colleges are their cost effectiveness, hands-on training, and length of coursework. Although financial aid is not as widely available at technical colleges as it is at universities, students may find assistance programs. Counseling services may also be available. As always, high school counselors can help students with these decisions and guide them toward the appropriate plan.
