Lansing District and Curriculum
Citizens of the Town of Lansing will attend Lansing Central School District (LCSD), with some area residents’ attending Ithaca City School District (ICSD). Both the LCSD and ICSD adhere to the standards and guidelines created by the New York State Education Department (NYSED). The NYSED recently adopted the Common Core State Standards (CCSS), transforming its state standards into the Common Core Learning Standards (CCLS) for districts to follow. At present, the CCLS highlight unified and enhanced benchmarks for English language arts and mathematics.
We currently cover the following Lansing-area school districts: Ithaca City School District and Lansing Central School District.
Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Lansing District Curriculum
The primary curriculum at each district begins with foundational instruction in general academic subjects. Students take part in small- and large-group instruction, as well as attending lessons in non-core subjects, such as art, music, library, character education, and physical education. Students have opportunities to interact through unstructured play via recess, lunch, and snack time. The districts also offer students physical and speech therapies, academic intervention, special education, and other services when needed.
Students at the middle schools receive instruction in core academic subjects, as well as technology, media, music, foreign languages, physical education, health, and art. Support programs are also available, such as academic intervention, special education, and English as a second language. High school programs are similar to middle school offerings, except their courses are more specialized to prepare students for college and/or career.

Keeping Informed: Recent Lansing Educational News
- Concert Band Plays Student-Composed Piece at Conference - Students from Ithaca High School performed their band-mate’s piece “Unspoken” before the New York School Music Association’s winter conference audience. Third-seat French horn player, Robin Steuteville, created the piece in eighth grade.
- School Performances Receives Boost from Community - Students in the third and fourth grades’ Nutcracker Chorus, as well as the Lansing High School’s Jazz Band and High School Show Choir performed for residents during the Cookies and Carols event. The Lansing Theater and Performing Arts sponsors the event by providing schools with necessary stage equipment. The community also has opportunities to win prizes through various raffles.
- Turkey Trot Raises Money for Residents in Need - Runners from the 42nd annual Turkey Trot joined together at Ithaca High School to race and raise funds for community residents. The proceeds of the event go to Loaves and Fishes, a local food pantry.

Without a clear plan, students may waste time (and money) in high school and college courses, which can defeat their abilities to find their true callings. Some schools offer career assessments, such as personality and interests surveys, but many times, this step is not enough. Parents and teachers should help guide teenagers to determine their paths, even if it takes a few years to narrow down. Adults should encourage teens to identify their interests and passions, but in practical ways.
