Chalk Talk: Considerations for Young Learners

A student's success in the classroom is based on many factors including both social and intellectual factors. Supporting a child's learning at home, therefore, can consist of much more than helping with homework or reading often with the child. Parents can emphasize the ways in which certain qualities will help a student throughout life. For instance, can the child follow directions? Is he or she socially appropriate? Can he or she perform basic skills required of their teachers? Judging whether a child has the skills for success, may be contingent on school factors. There are also questions to be asked about the learning environment and how that will work for the child. Find out whether the learning environment is formal or less traditional. Class size, screening procedures, and curriculum are all important factors. With these various thoughts in mind, advocating and supporting the best education for a child can be very a successful and positive experience.
