Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Edgewood District Curriculum
Edgewood’s middle school math curriculum helps bridge the gap between the basic mathematical skills students acquire in elementary school and the advanced skills they will learn in high school. Middle school students work with ratios and gain the ability to differentiate between ratios and unit rates. Quotients and fractions are also part of the curriculum. Students interpret and compute fractions, exploring both the measurement concept and partition concept and develop the ability to work with multi-digit numbers also.
Edgewood students also participate in a comprehensive English language arts curriculum that focuses on the development of reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills. With regard to speaking and listening, high school students practice these skills by taking part in various collaborative discussions with classmates. Students demonstrate an ability to come to class prepared and ready to contribute positively to class discussions. Learners also explore how to move conversations along by posing and answering appropriate questions.
