Monterey District and Curriculum
The curriculum used in the schools of Monterey has been developed to provide a standards-based approach to learning. These standards explain the skills required for learning areas of Math like algebra, geometry, data anlaysis and numerical operations. In English/Language Arts the curriculum covers reading, writing, listening and speaking by pinpointing the skills that help students develop critical thinking abilities in these areas. The Science curriculum covers earth science, biology, chemistry, physics, environmental science and technology.

The state assessments that are given in math, reading and writing are aligned to the Common Core Standards. The expectations put forth within the curriculum are the skills and fundamental knowledge that students are tested on and scores allow teachers and parents to see how a student is doing on meeting the expectations.
Other subject areas like Social Studies and History, Languages, Environmental Programs and programs like Advanced Placement have specific curriculum devised for the teaching and learning in their courses. - Junior Wing Japan Exchange - At the Middle School in Monterey there is an exchange program with another community in Japan. The two communities send children to visit, stay with families and attend school in the other country once a year.
- Global Rights - One of the small academies at Monterey High School prepares students for future studies and careers in Global Rights Administration. The school also provides a focus on the basics of business giving students a very well-rounded introduction to the field.
- Oceanographic Studies - Monterey High also offers an academy focused on Oceanographic Studies. Students are able to complete hands-on learning experiences and build skills in the scientific and research process.
