Miami-Dade County Public Schools is the fourth largest school district in the U.S., comprising several schools in the Miami area. Sunset Park Elementary, Miami Sunset Senior High School, and Miami Palmetto Senior High are located within close proximity to Kendall, FL. Miami Sunset Senior High School offers courses at the Honors, A.P., and College Prep levels. The school includes a wide selection of academies, allowing students to pursue specific interests. The Advanced Global Studies Academy involves a rigorous college preparatory course of study that cultivates students’ ability to make global connections among various disciplines.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Kendall District Curriculum
There are many rigorous offerings at the school such as the Medical Magnet, which exposes students to one of these three strands: Pre-Med, Applied Medical Sciences, or Sports Medicine. In Pre-Med, students engage in project-based learning and learn laboratory techniques, preparing them for a future in medical school. The Applied Medical Sciences strand involves students pursuing various health careers through studying the life sciences, conducting research, and applying inquiry-based learning. Lastly, Sports Medicine gives students the opportunity to partake in on-site internships with the school’s athletic teams.
In the four-year Education Academy, students work at an accredited on-site early childhood center, with the option of interning at a local elementary school during the fourth year; students can earn many certifications through this program. The Academy of Engineering is centered on an extremely rigorous national curriculum and is built around project-based learning and 21st century skills acquisition. The other academies are Visual and Performing Arts, Law & Public Service, Business & Finance, Information & Media Technology, and Hospitality and Tourism.

- New Surgeon General Former Palmetto Senior High Valedictorian - The newly appointed surgeon general of the U.S. graduated from Palmetto Senior High at the age of 16, earned a GPA of 6.09, and was awarded a prestigious scholarship as well as admission into Harvard. Vivek Murphy’s former teachers described him as mature, driven, and always at the top of his class.
- Miami Sunset Senior High Teacher Shows Artwork in Exhibition - Upon earning a Master in Art Education degree, Miami Sunset art teacher Meredith Kebaili had the opportunity to display her work in the 2014 Master in Art Education Exhibition. She described her paintings as symbolic of people who have impacted her life.
- Miami-Dade Students Gather Equipment for Dominican Athletes - Each year, a group of students from the Miami-Dade Schools, including Miami Palmetto Senior High, collect recycled sports equipment and clothing to send to young impoverished athletes in areas of the Dominican Republic. This year, the group of baseball-playing friends was able to gather over 5,000 sports items for the children.

Chalk Talk: The Gender Gap in Education
A common issue in education is that boys do not enjoy reading, while girls struggle with science and math. Boys often have difficulty with reading because they think it is “uncool” to be seen reading books for enjoyment. A large factor is a lack of availability of boy-friendly reading material, which is further compounded by the fact that the majority of elementary teachers are females. This is problematic, as having positive attitudes toward reading plays a key role in students’ ability to comprehend texts. Teachers need to pay special attention to boys’ interests and allow them to read and write about topics they are passionate about, including sports. Incorporating electronic books via iPads, Kindles, etc. can also help motivate boys to read in this technology-driven society. As for the girls, although females are becoming more and more ambitious with their career aspirations, they are still lagging behind the males when it comes to math and science—particularly in their presence in fields such as engineering and science.
