Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Key West District Curriculum

The district has developed learning sequences for each grade level and content area, providing a list of standards and an overview of the expectations for learning over the course of the school year. Monroe School District has also made public PowerPoint presentations, documents, and videos that were a part of a workshop for administrators on implementing and using the Common Core Standards.

One focus in the math curriculum is the expressions and equations strand. Students develop an understanding of each part of an expression, including the sum, factor, quotient, and coefficient. Students also learn how to evaluate expressions, including how to determine the specific values for their variables. Inverses are explored, as are positive and negative values for fractions and decimals. Students also study the properties of operations, and learn how to use them to generate equivalent expressions. Procedures to simplify expressions are introduced as well.

Chalk Talk: Service Projects in Schools

Having students give back to their community and understand the importance of doing so is very powerful. High schools often require students to complete a certain amount of community service hours and create a culminating project on their experience(s). In these situations, it is essential that students understand why their service is so important and not just that it is a requirement for school. Exposing children to community service projects at a young age may make them more likely to volunteer at the own accord as teens. Although elementary schools generally do not mandate this for students, teachers can find simple ways to give back. One such way is for students to collect unused or recycled items to donate to a charity or cause. Classes can invite families, teachers, and students in other classrooms to contribute. If it is difficult for students to contribute money or items, they may be able to donate their time; perhaps they can travel to a local senior living center and talk with residents.
