Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Lakeside District Curriculum
Clay County Schools’ Career & Technical Education (CTE) Department offers a wide range of “Academies of Clay” for students to specialize in specific potential career pursuits. The Academies include Business & Leadership (business, culinary arts, digital design, etc.); Arts, Manufacturing, and Veterinary Technology (automotive technology, band, chorus); Law & Emergency Services (criminal justice, health science); Business & Finance (hospitality and tourism); Digital Media; Teaching & Learning; Visual & Performing Arts (drama, fashion design); and Information Technology.
Data shows that Clay County students who enter these programs are better prepared for college and the workplace, earn more industry certifications than students in most other school districts in Florida, are able to work closely with and job shadow those in the industry they are interested in, and are able to network with business partners and participate in mock interviews and internships. The district explains each of the Academies in greater details and has created a video explaining the program options and expectations.

Keeping Informed: Recent Lakeside Educational News
- Angel the Furry Friend Helps Out Kindergarteners - In the past, a dog named Angel has served as an assistant to kindergarten students at Argyle Elementary. Angel has helped get the children excited to come to school and even read and write more! Because the students enjoyed reading and writing letters to her, she became certified as a R.E.A.D. Program Reading Education Assistance Dog, meaning that students could sit down and read with her without worrying about making mistakes when they were reading.
- Clay County’s Employees of the Year Named - In the past, the District of Clay County honored sixth grade teacher Jennifer Moore and elementary school nurse Linda Turner as the School-Related Employees of the Year. Ms. Moore believes it is critical to have high expectations for all students, including those who are labeled as low-achievers. Ms. Turner is known for her caring personality and for knitting at least one scarf for every child in the school.
- Teacher Exposes Students to Sparta vs. Athens - Mrs. Tichinel wanted her students to understand the differences between the cultures of the Ancient Greek city-states of Athens and Sparta. She designed a hands-on learning activity in which students did drill-like physical activities like the training the Spartans did as well as gaining an appreciation of the arts and education as the Athenians did. Mrs. Tichinel even dressed up as an Ancient Greek for the lesson.

Chalk Talk: How Florida Schools Are Unique
School districts in Florida are structured differently than those in other states. Many of them are very large districts—some with 100 or more schools—that encompass entire counties. In other areas, it is more common to see a county contain dozens of school districts. In other areas, school districts often have only one high school, while most Florida districts are comprised of several high schools. Furthermore, it is popular to see learning “academies” in Florida schools. These academies help high school students take personal tracks in their courses and pursue special interests that may be future careers for them. Although schools in other states frequently offer technical schools and some specialized courses, these academies seem to provide more variety in the areas students can pursue and allow students to form relationships with people in the industry and potentially earn certifications. These programs truly prepare students for college and their careers.
