Chalk Talk: Everyday Reasons to Learn Math

Although most people aren’t going to use trigonometry in their daily lives, everyone utilizes math skills each and every day. It is for this reason that children must take part in math classes – they need to be able to function in everyday life. From simple tasks such as figuring tips or tax on a purchase, to more complex tasks like managing long-term finances, math is an integral component of adult life. Math skills are required to determine a monthly budget, including calculating what types of purchases one needs to cut out each month in order to save a specified amount of money. Furthermore, math skills can be used to save time. Being able to calculate the amount of time one spends driving to work each day and comparing that to taking mass transit can result in making a commute change that saves time (and money) each day. Learning and using math is important for the next generation as well. Studies show that parents who utilize math will raise children that utilize math and who aren’t afraid or intimidated by it.
