Palmetto Bay District and Curriculum
The Miami-Dade County Public Schools follows a core curriculum that helps students develop a strong base of knowledge upon which to build further learning. There is also an increasing emphasis on technology; students learn how to use the Internet and access information on the world wide web. Principles of digital citizenship are explored, including safe usage of the Internet and how to protect one’s information while using apps or accessing websites.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Palmetto Bay District Curriculum
Miami-Dade County Public Schools provide language arts instruction to students using a variety of hands-on activities. Artistic activities will be combined with writing at the kindergarten and elementary school level to expand creative-thinking skills. Literary analysis is stressed as students advance and is examined through classroom discussions and comprehension questions. Honors and Advanced Placement courses are also available.
Students will study American history, government, economics, and geography at in social studies courses at all grade levels. These courses will progress from educating students about their relation to their immediate environment to exploring the effects of human actions on the past, present, and future. In middle school, the use of tools and technology will provide students with opportunities to acquire and present information. The opportunity to delve into topics that include world history, sociology, and the humanities is also available in high school.

- Palmetto High School to Get a Facelift - Palmetto High School will be getting a complete makeover soon! Architectural and engineering firms will begin drawing up plans next summer that will focus on demolishing and replacing some buildings and renovating others. The auditorium, science wing, and media center will all be upgraded, while new parking lots and dining facilities will also be built.
- Howard Drive Student Use Creativity to Beat the Competition - Students from Howard Drive Elementary School recently won first place in the 2014 Odyssey of the Mind competition with their rendition of the fable, Three Little Pigs. The competition focuses on critical thinking and problem-solving and asked competitors to build a vehicle that incorporated recycled materials. Howard Drive students designed a vehicle that looked like a wolf and used other materials to represent flowers and the woods.
- Howard Drive Students Place in the Top 10 - Howard Drive Elementary School students sent two student teams to The Fourth Annual Middlementary Bonanza Mathematics Competition this year. The contest focuses on algebra, geometry, mental math, and problem solving. One fourth-grade student placed second, while two fifth-graders placed third and seventh in the individual competitions.

Chalk Talk: Studying for an Anatomy Class
Numerous students have reported the difficulty they experience when studying for anatomy classes. There are 26 bones, 34 muscles, and 123 ligaments in the human hand alone. Memorizing these and other structures in the body can be time-consuming and require a lot of brain power. There are some tips that can help this process, however. The first tip is that you should set aside 810 hours per week outside of class to study. Although there are classes in which you may need less preparation time when it comes to assignments and tests, anatomy is not one of them. The second tip is an often repeated one: using flashcards can be a great help. Since anatomy classes usually require more memorization and less understanding of concepts, simple repetition can be the difference between receiving an A or B. Diagrams are another great study tool. If you enjoy drawing, you can make these as detailed as you like or you can simply print or copy pages from your textbook or websites.
