The Crossings District and Curriculum
Miami-Dade County Public Schools is one of the largest school districts in the U.S. and consists of schools located in the Miami area. The Crossings is a suburb of Miami; Arvida Middle School is located nearby. The district follows Common Core Standards in English Language Arts and Math, and Sunshine State Standards to cover other subject areas. Each subject area curricular framework explains the main topics and learning expectations for students to achieve. This is further supplemented by electives and extracurricular opportunities that connect learning to students interests.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the The Crossings District Curriculum
Arvida Middle School offers two specialized magnet programs for students: Forensic Science & Fine Arts and Global Studies. Arvida’s Forensic Science Academy was established in 2007 and was the first such academy to crop up in Miami-Dade County. It is a rigorous, case-based program in which students acquire the skills needed to solve crimes, including fingerprinting and chemical analysis. Students engage in problem solving, cooperative learning, and critical thinking and have the opportunity to take field trips to places such as Washington, D.C., SeaWorld, and Hollywood Studios.
The school has paired forensic science with fine arts in order to develop well-rounded individuals; students can choose from fine arts electives such as drama, orchestra, art, band, and dance. The Global Studies Magnet Program has been around even longer, having been established in 1999. The goal is for students to learn about issues in the environment and how they can have an impact on the world around them. This is a challenging interdisciplinary program that involves hands-on learning, with students discovering efficient ways they can help their environment.

Keeping Informed: Recent The Crossings Educational News
- Miami-Dade Students Send Athletic Equipment to Dominican Students - Recently, a group of baseball players in the Miami-Dade County district collected over 5,000 sports items to be handed out to children in the Dominican Republic. The purpose of this annual project is to gather and sent recycled sports equipment and clothing to impoverished athletes in the Dominican Republic.
- Miami-Dade Students Crack the Code - Recently, Miami-Dade students participated in “Hour of Code” week during which they performed such activities as programming a robot to speak, walk, and wave his arms. This national movement is designed to encourage students to learn computer programming, or coding—a cross-disciplinary activity that requires reading, math, and science.
- Miami-Dade Superintendent Nominated for FBI Leadership Award - The superintendent of Miami-Dade Schools has been nominated for the 2014 Community Leadership Award. The award will be presented by the FBI Director in Washington, D.C. in 2015.

Students who are not paying attention in class, performing well in school, or completing their schoolwork may be described as lazy or problematic, but teachers may not realize the issues students have to deal with outside of school that bring on their in-classroom issues. It is very difficult for students to leave their problems at the classroom door and enter distraction-free and ready to learn. One of the biggest issues that students deal with is their parents divorcing. This is a tumultuous situation for students, as their family is breaking apart, and they may wonder if they are part of the reason. They may have to deal with situations such as going back and forth from one parent’s home to the other to live or their divorced parents dating or marrying new people. Similarly, they may be a part of single-parent homes, which may mean that there are financial struggles. This doesn’t mean that students who come from wealthy families will not have worries, though. Oftentimes, there is immense pressure on these students to be highly successful.
