Westchester District and Curriculum

Miami-Dade Public Schools is the fourth largest school district in the U.S., consisting of all public schools in the Miami area. All students are required to take five core courses: language arts, math, science, social studies which includes world history/geography for sixth grade, civics for seventh grade, and U.S. history for eighth grade, and foreign language. Variations of courses include advanced, gifted, honors and ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages). The goal is to provide students with a solid and comprehensive academic foundation as well as offer courses that connect to personal or career interests.

We currently cover the following Westchester-area school district: Miami-Dade County Public Schools.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Westchester District Curriculum

At the middle school level, Honors algebra, geometry, physical science, and biology are options for advanced seventh or eighth graders; the more general math and science courses are comprehensive and focus on a wide range of topics within each discipline, which is typical of middle school classes. French and Spanish are offered as foreign languages, including a more advanced course for students who are Spanish speakers.

The district also has many electives in areas of high interest to students as well as courses that can help students prepare for possible career choices. Elective choices include TV production, drama, robotics, basic business courses, chess, library, journalism, creative writing, guitar, keyboarding, and others. The school is home to three academies: Law Studies, Robotics, and Gifted. The academies maintain a focus on core learning while integrating topics from these fields and extending the learning opportunities into a specific realm.

  • Former Rockway Middle School Quadruplets Graduate - The Tablada quadruplets—all girls—have had many of their milestones followed by the Miami Herald, including their graduation from Miami-Dade County’s Southwest High. Chalk Talk: Celebrating Historical Figures and Commemorative Months

Throughout the school year, schools may celebrate certain famous figures or focus on a larger them like Black History Month or Women's History Month. These offer students great opportunities for personal exploration of these themes. For example, after children read the famous "I Have a Dream" speech, they can compose their own such speeches on what their dreams are to improve a world that has a great deal of issues. They may focus on world peace, including ending specific items such as war and terrorism. Racism still persists today in many pockets of the world and for many groups of people, so this may be a focus. Students' dreams may be centered on smaller scales; for example, they may wish to end bullying in their school, with everybody respecting one another. This is a great way to help the legacy of the person or subject studied to live on.
