Chalk Talk: School Issues: School Lunches

For years, schools have served unhealthy items such as “mystery meat” for lunch and, but the tide is starting to change when it comes to serving healthy foods to children in the cafeteria. Many state and federal mandates are requiring that schools offer certain healthy options. Although kids will readily eat the unhealthy fried foods and desserts and think they taste great, they deserve to be provided with nutritious food. First of all, more nutritious foods may provide students with more energy and help them perform better in school. Also, childhood obesity is a widespread epidemic in the U.S., and unhealthy school lunches are a big factor in an unprecedented number of children being diagnosed with type II diabetes. Although parents can pack their children’s lunches if they do not like the food choices, some families lack the income to provide their children with nutritious lunches and rely on the school to give their children this simple necessity.
