Bay Shore District and Curriculum
Bay Shore Schools manages seven schools and 5,750 students. The district’s superintendent regularly updates a Superintendent’s Message that appears on the district website’s homepage. The Office of Instructional Services consists of the Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum, Instruction and Administration; two Data & Testing Coordinators; and the Coordinator for Funded Programs. Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Bay Shore District Curriculum
According to the district, the Common Core Standards necessitate several shifts for both English language arts and math. In ELA, students read as many nonfiction books as they do fiction, read more challenging texts, respond to texts using evidence, write nonfiction material that includes textual evidence, and use and know more academic vocabulary. Students explore the role and influence of setting and sequencing in developing an effective theme.
In math, there are fewer topics taught in greater depth, a focus on skill building and accuracy, and relating math to the real world. Students will begin their education by acquiring mathematics-related vocabulary and recognizing and identifying basic numbers and shapes. Students work with graphs in order to explain position vs. time, velocity vs. time, and acceleration vs. time. Graphs are also used to increase students ability to communicate math thought and solve problems that involve average velocity and acceleration.

- Middle School Students Become Reporters - The editor of Newsday’s “Kidsday” section visited a class in Bay Shore Middle School in order to hone students’ reporting skills, including interviewing, writing, and editing. The students had the opportunity to report for “Kidsdsay” for a few weeks and composed such pieces as book reviews, recipes, and surveys. They also conducted the special celebrity interview; past interviewees include Ariana Grande and LeBron James.
- Fifth Avenue Principal Receives Award Named After MLK - Fifth Avenue School’s principal Ms. Wilson was one of eleven recipients in her county to be awarded the Suffolk County Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Commission Award. Ms. Wilson humbly accepted the award, reading an inspiring MLK quote and talking about the true meaning of the award. In her speech, she also discussed the importance of children having mentors.
- Bay Shore Students Enhance Understanding of Novel - In conjunction with their reading of Tim O’Brien’s The Things They Carried, which was set during the Vietnam War, eleventh grade students received an hour-long visit from Capt. John Cochrane—a captain in the U.S. Navy, councilman, and Bay Shore graduate. Additionally, the Bay Shore Arts Education Fund gave the students the opportunity to attend a live performance, which expanded their understanding of the novel and time period even further.

Oftentimes, the parents raising them works long hours and may not have the time to make sure they are keeping up with their schoolwork. It may also be difficult for them to attend parent-teacher conferences or school or class events. It is important to keep in mind that children from single-parent families have a lot weighing on them, but teachers should also avoid making misconceptions about the single parents. Many single parents are strong role models for their children, are very loving, and care a great deal about their child’s schoolwork. If it is difficult for the parent to have time to attend conferences, it is important for the teacher to reach out to him/her.
