Chalk Talk: Connecting Annual Holidays to Yearlong Learning
Although Ground Hog Day may not be the most popular holiday, kids love to see whether or not Punxsutawney Phil sees his shadow. This annual event can lead to a lesson on weather in elementary classrooms. If Phil sees his shadow, they can talk about the weather that they would expect to see over the next six weeks of winter in their location (perhaps snow, cold, ice, etc.). The same could be done for spring if Phil does not see his shadow (rain, warm, sun, etc.). Students can even compare and contrast the two seasons and give weather reports. Younger students can learn about the seasons of winter and spring and compare and contrast various aspects of the seasons, such as clothing that would be worn (heavy coats in the winter and lighter sweaters in the spring), what they might see outside (icicles and snowmen in the winter; flowers and birds in the spring); and activities that would be performed within each season (sled riding in the winter; gardening in the spring). Students can also research and learn about groundhogs: habitats, what they eat, how long they sleep, what kind of senses they have, physicandal characteristics.
