Chalk Talk: The Importance of Math Skills

Math is clearly an important component of the K-12 public school curriculum. However, some students question why they need to learn math, arguing that it isn’t something they will use in their everyday lives. However, math is in fact a very important part of day-to-day living. First, math skills are required in order to calculate a tip for services such as eating dinner at a restaurant. Being able to estimate an appropriate amount by examining the check total is a basic skill. Second, math skills include the ability to foresee long-term consequences. This could be applied to finding the quickest route to a destination, determining which stocks will perform the best, or deciding how much interest will be paid on a loan over the long-term. Lastly, basic math skills can help people live a healthier life. Being able to count calories or determine the daily value of fats or cholesterol might help in making healthier decisions, which cannot be done without math skills.
