EDUCATIONAL PHILOSOPHY
When teaching, I have always approached the classroom in seminar fashion. While I was dubbed a “lecturer” while teaching at Mississippi State, I never lectured in class. I like discussing themes, concepts, and writing techniques with my students either in class or in conferences.
The idea of filling an empty head with information in lecture-style does not interest me, and it is not a helpful means for tutoring either. The learning experience is meant to be a conversation and an exchange of words and ideas in order to better grasp the concept of writing.
EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND
I received my Bachelor’s Degree in English at Delta State University in Cleveland, Mississippi. I then attended Mississippi State for two years and earned my Master’s Degree in English while also teaching there. My four and a half years in undergrad prepared me for high school teaching. My two years in grad school in turn prepared me for college teaching.
TEACHING EXPERIENCE
I taught as a lecturer at Mississippi State from 2012-2014. While in both undergrad and grad school, I also tutored at their writing centers. I tutored at Delta State for 5 semesters and at Mississippi State for 6 semesters. I have also taught a total of 4 classes of creative writing (fiction and poetry) during two summers at the Janice Wyatt Mississippi Summer Arts Institute at Delta State University in Cleveland, Mississippi.
EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES
I have experience in both theater and journalism from my high school years. I minored in theater at Delta State while in undergrad. I am a self-taught guitarist. I also partake in creative writing, poetry mostly.
