Chalk Talk: Essential Reasons to Study History
History is a central component of all K-12 curricula, but some children question why they need to learn about long-ago people, places, and events. There are many reasons for the necessity of history. First, history isn’t something static that took place long ago. History is in a constant state of occurrence, and the events that occur today are in some way, shape, or form, influenced by events of the past. Secondly, history allows us to devise a framework within which we come to understand the world around us. By gaining perspective on what’s occurred in the past, students can better understand their present. Lastly, history inspires us to make better decisions, teaches us discernment, and motivates us to be better than previous generations. It is through these processes that students acquire the tools they need to continue to improve the world in which they live.
