Aloha District and Curriculum
The curriculum at Beaverton School District is based on the 21st Century School Council and the Common Core Curriculum. These standards increase the opportunities that students have to do analytic work and seek to develop intellectual skills such as reasoning and innovating. With this as their guide, they are able to create a curriculum that prepares students for college and a career. Community service, character education and wellness learning are also important features of the districts’ curriculum. The wellness component of the curriculum encourages students to take part in physical activities outside of school. Students are encouraged to participate in yoga, cycling, hiking, water sports and other activities that promote a healthy lifestyle.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Aloha District Curriculum
Beaverton School District includes the study of various genre of literature in their English curriculum. Through this area of the subject students are exposed to many different types of literature from a variety of times and cultures. The students cover literature from times such as the American Colonial, Romanticism and the Harlem Renaissance as they learn how to compare and contrast different author’s viewpoints of the same topic. Through this, the students are able to see that there are different perspectives to each topic and to consider these when researching a topic.
Biology is a section of the science curriculum at Beaverton School District. This topic introduces the students to plants and animals and what is required to keep each alive. They may study topics that cover physical characteristics which makes each living thing different, to the genetics behind each living thing. They also learn about evolution and ecology and about concepts of interdependence of species and ecosystems. In high school, students study topics such as DNA and heredity which connects their learning to many real life applications.

- Junior Statesmen of America - The Junior Statesmen of America is organized for those who have an interest in politics, government, foreign affairs, law and education. The students plan and carry out all the conventions, conferences and events which are held. The students participate in debates, discussions, simulations and problem-solving. They also participate in activities that help them meet other students with the same interests.
- Model UN - Model UN gives students the opportunity to understand the issues that are faced by the United Nations. The members work together to come to a resolution to a problem. Each group is assigned a country or organization. They then consider differing viewpoints, negotiate and see the reward of working together. The aim of this group is to broaden the students’ view of the world and see how international relations is connected to humanity and diplomacy.
- Parent and Community Involvement - The district invites the adult members of the community to volunteer in the schools. There are a number of roles that parents or local organizations can play to improve the educational opportunities for students from helping a student with a subject to advising an extracurricular group or providing a work learning experience.

Chalk Talk: Metacognition
Metacognition is the skill of thinking about thinking. Some students have highly developed this skill, and while it may not seem important, it is a skill that every person should develop. To help a child in this area a parent can encourage the child to think about what they know and don't know about a topic before studying it. Then as they study they can confirm, or replace information. The child can also be encouraged to talk about the thinking process, parents can help by modeling this by thinking aloud while solving a problem. A thinking journal is a tool that these children will find helpful. In this the child notes their thinking process along with any difficulties they have come across. With these few tools, students can become better at metacognition.
