Central Islip District and Curriculum
Central Islip Public Schools consist of eight schools and 6,500 students. There is an early childhood center, four elementary schools, two middle schools, and a high school. The district’s vision is to provide students with rich learning experiences to help them blossom into contributing citizens of a global society. Central Islip Public Schools’ curriculum aligns with the New York Common Core Learning Standards, which have the main goal of preparing students for college and their careers as much as possible. Another key factor is for teachers to differentiate instruction to meet the individualized learning and assessment needs of each student within the framework of these standards.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Central Islip District Curriculum
English Language Arts in elementary school begins with the fundamentals of reading and writing. As they progress, students learn about literary devices hyperbole and paradoxes, and learn how to utilize context in their readings to understand figurative speech. They analyze character development as well. Students identify the means by which authors bring characters to life, including the use of first and third person perspectives to offer a more complete picture of a character.
Both formal and informal assessment data via state standardized tests, district-level exams, observations and anecdotal records, A.P. enrollment, etc. drive the district’s reviewing and evaluating of the curriculum. The district welcomes input from the community as to how the curriculum can be enhanced. The high school curriculum is designed to meet the needs of students with various future aspirations, such as high school, technical school, and working right out of high school.

- CIHS Students Wins PSA Contest - A junior at Central Islip High had his PSA video about the dangers of energy drinks earn a proclamation by two legislators for the Suffolk County PSA Video Contest. His PSA will air on a local news station.
- Pennies and Pajamas - Cordello Elementary students and staff collected 79 pairs of pajamas and $119 worth of pennies and change to contribute to the Scholastic Reading Club Great Bedtime Story Pajama Drive. The drive benefits the Pajama Program—a nonprofit organza ion that provides pajamas and books for children in need, with Scholastic contributing a book for every pair of pajamas donated.
- Students Win Prestigious Suffolk Zone Award - Two Central Islip seniors were awarded the Suffolk Zone Award on behalf of the New York State Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance (NYSAHPERD). The students had to maintain an “A” grade in their physical education classes, have an overall GPA of at least 3.0, have outstanding character and contribute positively to their phys. ed. classes, serve in a leadership capacity, and be role models in terms of healthy living.

Chalk Talk: How Snow Days Impact Teachers
When winter is in full force, and northern parts of the U.S. see snowstorms and bitterly cold temperatures, children will likely see a few school days. Just because they have school off doesn’t necessarily mean they can’t do any learning. With extreme winter weather causing more school closings, some schools are considering holding virtual classes on canceled days. Even if they don’t, teachers can post content reviews, mathematical word problems, writing prompts, etc. and be sure to make parents aware that these items are being posted. Although they may not be able to grade these things, students who do complete and read the material will have their memories refreshed and will have gained extra practice. An idea is for teachers to post extra credit assignments on snow days that must be completed and brought back the next day school is open to earn the credit. /p>
