Garden City District and Curriculum
Garden City Public Schools is responsible for the education of nearly 4,000 K-12 students in Garden City. The district includes three primary schools, two elementary schools, one middle school, and one high school. Each school’s staff members take pride in the educational programming they offer to their students. Their commitment to academic excellence is reflected in the fact that four of the district’s schools are National Blue Ribbon Award Winners. The middle school and high school have been additionally named as New York State Reward Schools. Students are able to achieve their potential in part because of the small class sizes that afford them increased contact time with teachers. With a wide variety of academic programs, including honors and AP classes, students have many opportunities to learn, explore, and grow.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Garden City District Curriculum
The science curriculum begins by introducing students to the principles of effective scientific inquiry. Students learn how to ask appropriate questions in order to gain a better understanding of the world in which they live. These questions form the basis for scientific research, and help students devise an understanding of the process of forming, testing, and accepting or rejecting a hypothesis. Various types of inquiry are explored, including direct observation and basic laboratory experiments. Students acquire the ability to record data, including their observations and specific measurements.
Garden City’s math curriculum is based on the guidelines of the Common Core State Standards. The geometry standards for high school students introduce them to the concept of congruence. As part of their studies, students experiment with plane transformations, prove geometric theorems, and make geometric constructions. Similarity is another concept introduced to students, in particular with theorems and similarity transformations. Students work with circles as well, identifying arc lengths and calculating area of circles.

- District Part of “Public Schools That Work” - Garden City Public Schools is a member of the national organization Public Schools That Work. The organization recognizes school districts that spread positive news about education and what teachers, administrators, and students are doing effectively.
- Student Athletes Participate in Victory Challenge - A record 21 physically challenged students from Garden City recently participated in the Nassau County Empire State Games. Dozens of their classmates attended to support the athletes and learn a valuable lesson in competition themselves.
- Customizable Learning Available - Garden City’s special education department recently unveiled Learning Ally. The program offers customizable learning options for students with a reading or learning disability and helps them gain practice in targeted skills where they need additional work.

Because of this, frequent readers have improved vocabularies, word comprehension, and understanding of proper grammar. Another benefit of reading is that frequent readers demonstrate a greater capacity for concentration. The effort involved in sitting quietly and focusing on a book requires far more self-control than it does to sit and watch TV. Reading is also a great way for kids to learn about the world in which they live, as well as societies and cultures that are much different from their own. In this regard, reading opens kids’ minds to different ways of thinking and living, and promotes increased empathy and understanding for others.
