Valley Stream District and Curriculum
Valley Stream Union Free School District 30 is responsible for providing a comprehensive public education to students in kindergarten through high school. The vision of the district is to maximize the potential of each and every student. Supporting this vision is the district’s mission to work with parents and community members to devise learning programs that stimulate independent thought, promote curiosity of learning, and foster the acquisition of essential academic, personal, and social skills to be successful members of society. Students engage in learning in environments that are safe and inclusive to all. Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Valley Stream District Curriculum
The social studies curriculum in Valley Stream includes an examination of global history and geography. Students learn about cultural diffusion, including the methods by which cultural, social, and political information was distributed in ancient times. Barriers to cultural diffusion, such as bodies of water, deserts, and mountains, are identified as well. Migration and settlement patterns of ancient humans are also explored. Students identify the environmental factors that improved the likelihood of human activity, such as the presence of water, food, and a reasonable climate.
Migration and settlement patterns are contrasted with human settlements of the present, which are far more diverse. Students examine the relationship between settlers and Native Americans, and analyze how Native peoples were negatively impacted by this settlement. Learners also analyze the methods by which the federal government seized Native lands in an effort to expand the nation’s boundaries. Belief systems are analyzed as well. Students learn about world religions and the basic tenets of Hinduism, Buddhism, Islam, Judaism, and Christianity.

- Summer Programs Offered - Valley Stream District 30 offers summer programming for students who need to catch up. The summer reading program gives ESL students a chance to gain extra skills over a five-week course, while the special education program helps students build skills and progress towards meeting their IEP goals.
- ESL Program Focuses on Goals - With a large ESL student population, District 30 has outlined several goals for its ESL program. The program is focused on two areas – helping students develop academic language, and helping students develop social and cultural language skills.
- Quest: Academic Enrichment Program - Students in grades 3-6 have an opportunity to participate in enrichment programs during school. Students selected for the program are pulled from their regular classroom 1-2 times per week to participate in Quest, which offers challenging learning activities for students.

While college is certainly more expensive than ever, there are a number of ways that you can help your college-bound child reduces expenses. First, students in high school should take advantage of as may AP or dual-credit courses as possible. These college-level courses are accepted by many colleges and universities for credit, which saves on tuition and fees. Second, high school students should begin their search for scholarships, grants, and other sources of financial aid as early as possible. Checking with their high school counselor will help them determine the programs for which they might be eligible. Inquiring about possible financial aid at their colleges of interest is also a good idea. Lastly, before your child heads off to college, discuss with them some cost-cutting measures that will help pad their monthly budget. Recommend buying used books instead of new, eating on campus rather than going out a lot, and participating in on campus activities rather than paying for entertainment off campus. These are simple, yet effective ways to keep an eye on their bottom line.
