EDUCATIONAL PHILOSOPHY
Students learn differently, and an approach that works for one individual may not work for another. Being able to work one-on-one or with small groups of students allows for greater attention to be paid to students’ individual strengths and weaknesses, helping to craft a learning strategy that works best for them.
Modern classroom demands often mean that teachers aren’t able to spend as much time with individual students as the students may need, and I think tutoring can be a fantastic way to help fill in the gaps for those students who may need to spend more time on concepts, or have things presented in a different way.
EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND
Throughout school, I was interested in a variety of subjects, and performed well in different areas. Mathematics and English were always my greatest strengths, and it was my love of literature that led me to pursue my degree in the study of English Literature at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario.
I extended my honours degree from four to five years in order to take extra classes I was interested in, and by doing this, I feel I was able to achieve a more well-rounded understanding of my discipline.
TEACHING EXPERIENCE
I have experience in instruction spanning over several years. In high school, I was involved in the peer tutoring program for class credit, and worked with students in computer science to reinforce concepts taught in lectures and clarify concepts and practices for students who were having trouble.
I also did individual work with a handful of at-risk math students, largely dealing with test preparation. Due to my keen interest in English, I was also often approached by classmates for help with writing techniques and strategies, and consultation on project proposals.
EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES
For the last few years, I have been involved with the writing and publishing of web content with Bumpwire LLC. I am intimately involved in the writing and editing process, as well as responsible for new content proposals. This has given me the opportunity to hone my writing and communication skills, as our content is read by people of all ages from all over the world.
