Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Tullahoma District Curriculum

U. S. History is a part of the Social Studies curriculum. At Tullahoma City Schools, this subject covers the political, diplomatic, intellectual, cultural, social and economic history of the United States. To help the students discover the relevance of this subject to their lives, educators use primary and secondary sources as well as technological resources. By using each of these sources the students are able to tie the past with the present.

Tullahoma City Schools include biology in their study of science. Through this study students become familiar with living systems. As with other sciences, students begin by discovering the basic characteristics of living being and then becoming more specific as they progress through the grades. By the time they graduate, the students become so familiar with the human body that they are able to design a project that takes the students on a tour through the human body. Students learn to look at the details of a topic, in order to convey detailed information.

Chalk Talk: Developing Speaking Skills in Children

Children can lose confidence when asked to speak in front of others. There are some ways that parents can help children overcome this fear. First, bring a group of children from the same age group together. Then have the child practice speaking in front of them and encourage them to listen to any feedback. This group should meet regularly to become more comfortable. Parents also need to help create a list of goals and then reward them when they accomplish these goals. Finally, use technology to help the child prepare. Have her research ideas, watch videos and listen to webcasts to find examples of good speaking skills. By helping the child in this way, they will be helping to build the child's confidence whenever they may speak.
