Business education is a primary component of Fairlawn’s financial literacy curriculum. The includes an introduction to accounting. Students learn the role and purpose of accounting, and identify the ways in which accounting procedures are essential to the growth and management of a business’ assets. Learners explore the various steps of the accounting cycle, noting the importance of communicating with other departments within a company in order to develop the clearest possible financial picture. Students differentiate between preparers and users as well, noting the technical verbiage used by preparers and the lay terms they utilize to make reports readable for users.

The Language Arts curriculum provides students with a range of strategies to build their critical reading and writing skills. Linking paragraphs together with appropriate transitions is a skill students acquire during the middle school years. Chalk Talk: E-Textbooks Coming to a School Near You

As technology continues to advance and become ever more integrated into education, more and more school districts are adopting e-textbooks for their courses. Doing so offers a host of benefits to school districts and their students. Although more expensive initially, e-textbooks save schools money in the long run because there is no need to replace lost or damaged books. Furthermore, teachers don’t need to worry about a student leaving his or her textbook at home. E-textbooks can be accessed from anywhere so long as there is a computer, tablet, or other device and a Wi-Fi connection available. This flexibility also allows students to engage in learning virtually anywhere. Whether at school, at home, or on the road, students can access their textbooks to complete their assignments. E-textbooks are also beneficial for students because of the smaller size and weight of tablets and laptops. Rather than lugging around a backpack full of heavy books, students can instead carry one laptop or tablet on which they can access all of their e-textbooks.
