Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Belpre District Curriculum
In high school, Belpre’s science students take an in-depth look at physics. Students examine forces, motion, and momentum, including gravitational, elastic, and friction forces. Learners also explore Newton’s laws and learn how to apply them to complex problems. Vector forces, centripetal forces, and motion down inclines are further topics of study as well. Students additionally analyze various forms of energy. Gravitational potential energy is assessed, as is the conservation of energy. Problem solving with regard to motion is a central component of the curriculum as well. Students learn how to use graphs to interpret average velocity, displacement, and acceleration. Learners also work with projectiles to determine the independence of vertical and horizontal motion.
Learners can also delve into a study of biomedical technologies, in which they acquire the ability to conduct basic medical research. Students learn how to use common laboratory equipment and become familiar with the scientific method in order to put hypotheses to the test, collect and analyze data, and report on findings.

Chalk Talk: How to Choose a College
There are many factors that your child must consider when choosing his or her college. For many families, finances play a major role in where a child attends college. Certainly, considering the expense of each school and the financial aid packages they offer is an important factor. However, there are other factors that should play into the decision. While the quality of a college may be great overall, it is important to determine the quality of the individual department in which your child plans to study to ensure it is up to par and will meet your child’s needs. Another important factor in choosing a college should be the college’s graduation rate and rate of career placement. The whole purpose of going to college is to then get a job after graduation, so it is necessary to examine how well each school facilitates that transition. Lastly, your child should make his or her decision on the campus experience. Some schools just feel right, and it’s important not to discount that gut feeling they have when they feel at home on campus.
