Philipstown District and Curriculum

Residents of Philipstown will attend one of three school districts: Lakeland Central School District (LCSD), Garrison Union Free School (GUFS), or Haldane Central School District (HCSD). Each district adheres to the Common Core State Standards (CCSS), adopted by the New York State Education Department (NYSED). These standards provide guidance to improve core academic performance and prepare students for life after high school. The CCSS’ current emphasis is on subject literacy and competencies with numbers. Primary curricula for kindergarten through grade five consist of instruction that gives students foundational knowledge in the core academic subjects. In addition, each high school provides students with career education and college-level opportunities.

We currently cover the following Philipstown-area school districts: Garrison Union Free School, Haldane Central School District, and Lakeland Central School District.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Philipstown District Curriculum

Each school is tasked with providing students with the skills they’ll need in the 21st century. The focus in grades six through eight is on preparing students for high school through encouraging social, emotional, and cognitive development. Students receive instruction in core academic subjects and have access to a greater selection of electives courses. The GUFS offers students a home and careers curriculum, while the LCSD has an expansive selection for students, including Italian, humanities, music studio, and many other interesting encore classes.

Highly motivated and capable eighth graders at Haldane Middle School may take Common Core Algebra and Regents Biology. The objective of the high school staff is to prepare students for post-secondary education and career. All three high schools—Haldane, Lakeland, and Walter Panas—offer students opportunities to enroll in Advanced Placement (AP) and college level courses. Each also provides occupational education to its students. Graduation requirements consist of a combination of coursework in language arts, math, social studies, science, physical education, art/music, health, foreign languages, and career and technical education.

Chalk Talk: Tips for Homework Time

Homework, generally, is used to help children reinforce classroom learning. As the children get older, the amount spent on it will generally increase, but the foundation should be the same. Parents can become bewildered when they want to help but are not sure how. The most important way for parents to help is by making themselves available. This can even take the form of talking with the child about their homework. This can help process the lesson and help it to take root. Even if a teen wants to do their homework in their rooms, ask specifics about the work frequently. Another point to consider is do not let others mastery of a subject affect the child. Some children will naturally take longer to complete their assignments. This can be frustrating, especially if they become lost, as far as goals for the assignment. If this happens, encourage the child to take a short break from it so they can come back to it after a while with a fresh and open mind.
