Lenox District and Curriculum
Students that live in the Town of Lenox attend Canastota Central School District (CCSD). The CCSD has designed a curriculum to meet the developmental needs of its students, while maintaining the integrity of the New York State (NYS) Common Core Learning Standards (CCLS). These standards focus on teaching each child to be literate in all subject matter, as well as competent with mathematical computations. Students who graduate from Canastota Schools should be prepared to enter post-secondary educational or work institutions. Educational activities are designed and implemented based upon the latest research and best practices. Classroom learning is based on curricula that are both rigorous and relevant to the needs of the 21st century.

Chalk Talk: Maintaining Healthy Hearts during School Holiday Partiess
Obesity is at an all-time high among young people. This trend is worrisome, because obesity can lead to a host of diseases and other health issues, including diabetes, heart disease, and depression. Holiday parties are always a difficult time for people who wish to stay away from sweets, but children are most vulnerable, as they typically have access to more holiday events. Festivities typically include candies, chocolates, cookies, cakes, and punch—the staples of any school social function. However, these items are loaded with sugar and carbohydrates that can cause dental and weight issues. Social gatherings of these sorts should focus on companionship and community, so it’s okay to celebrate without food as the centerpiece. Instead of bringing in candy hearts, make valentines. Rather than baking Christmas tree cookies, make or buy ornaments. If treats are on demand, make sure they are healthy. Sugar-free Jell-O, muffins, and fruits are sweet but healthy. With a little forethought, not only can adults help children maintain their health, but they can teach them valuable lessons about making positive choices.
