Hamlin District and Curriculum
School-aged children that live in the Town of Hamlin receive their education at one of three districts: Brockport Central School District (BCSD), Kendall Central School District (KCSD), and Hilton Central School District (HCSD). The districts that serve students from Hamlin use a curriculum that is consistent with the New York State (NYS) Common Core Learning Standards (CCLS). These standards provide quality instruction that prepare students for 21st century learning and employment. Students have access to many opportunities to explore their interests while receiving challenging core academic instruction. All students are to be literate in various types of reading, writing, speaking, and listening, as well as competent with solving numerical problems.
We currently cover the following Hamlin-area school districts: Brockport Central School District, Hilton Central School District, and Kendall Central School District.
Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Hamlin District Curriculum
At the primary level, students learn lessons in English language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies, with academic support to ensure all children receive developmentally appropriate coursework for each individual. Students at the elementary schools also have the opportunity to take art, music, and physical education courses. Character education is important at the primary level, and all academic lessons are designed to teach the whole child. The HCSD, in particular, provides an International Baccalaureate program to students in grades five and six (through grade ten), which provides advanced opportunities for gifted and talented students.
The secondary curriculum in the districts meets the state’s career and college readiness initiative. Students may learn through traditional coursework in the core academic subjects, as well as art, business education, health and physical education, languages other than English, music, and technology education. Advanced Placement (AP) courses, dual enrollment options, and independent study programs are also available to students on an accelerated track. Academic intervention services (AIS) support students who struggle with traditional learning.

Chalk Talk: Planning for Post-Secondary Goals
Deciding what you want to be when you grow up can be a difficult task. From a young age, students are asked to fine-tune their priorities and attend training in specific fields, even as early as middle school. It’s great to get a head start in middle and high school, but most of those courses are preparatory and free. Once you get into college, time and money is more precious, and it is wise to make prudent decisions about goals before heading to school. First, realize there are various types of colleges and degrees. Community colleges offer associate degrees and opportunities to transfer to four-year institutions. Typical associate degrees take two years to complete. Examples of post-degree employment include dental hygienist, automotive mechanic, graphic designer, and other technical positions. Four-year colleges and universities offer a variety of programs for multiple disciplines. Students may transfer in with an associate degree or completed general coursework.
