Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Esopus District Curriculum

The primary curriculum (K-6) consists of teaching students general academics, while introducing them to some exploratory options. Character education is a focus at the elementary level, as students become more social and work with others in a cooperative environment. Students will receive instruction in English language arts, mathematics, social studies, science, art, music, and physical education. Students also have access to academic intervention services (AIS), in addition to speech, physical, and occupational therapies.

Students at the middle and high school level receive training that helps students prepare for post-secondary options. Curriculum becomes more rigorous and specialized at this level, and students have many more options. In addition to core academic instruction, students will have access to courses in business, technology, world languages, family and consumer sciences, physical education and health, art, and music. The high schools all provide opportunities to enroll in Advanced Placement (AP) and dual enrollment courses for college credit, as well as vocational training through career and technical facilities.

Chalk Talk: How to Dampen Spring Fever

The cold winter months can make people feel blue, isolated, and bored. With the ever-increasing chill of sub-zero temperatures, many schools have had to cancel recess or school all together. As the weather warms, the outdoors will be tempting, but missed days and extreme testing schedules may force students to remain inside and at their desks. What you can do as a parent may help alleviate their stress and provide them with positive ways to burn off that extra energy. First, with the emergence of spring comes allergies, so make sure that your child doesn’t suffer from any issues that may impede his or her concentration. Discuss any non-drowsy options with an allergist, but don’t underestimate the power of pollen to sour moods. Second, give your child plenty of outdoor time after school. He or she has been in school for seven to eight hours, and playing, exercising, and getting fresh air is healthy. With an outlet for pent-up energy, your child may be less likely to act up in school, more likely to focus on homework, and will probably fall asleep better.
