Barton District and Curriculum
Residents of the Town of Barton will attend the Tioga Central School District (TCSD), which provides education from kindergarten to grade twelve at three facilities. The TCSD has created a curriculum that meets the educational demands of the New York State (NYS) Common Core Learning Standards (CCLS), specifically in mathematics and English language arts. Staff works to prepare students for subsequent learning, giving them a foundational understanding of all core subjects. Literacy in all subject matter and competency with mathematical computations is the focus of the CCLS, to date.
We currently cover the following Barton-area school district: Tioga Central School District.
Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Barton District Curriculum
Beginning with kindergarten, students receive developmentally appropriate instruction in core academic subjects, as well as exposure to the arts, music, and physical education. The middle school curriculum is specifically designed to promote social and emotional growth, while providing students with increasing rigor in all academic subjects. Students have options to take Advanced Placement (AP) math, starting in seventh grade, and they also have opportunities to begin taking courses in Spanish, life skills, technology, and health.
The high school curriculum is consistent with the NYS college and career readiness initiative. Students may take courses that prepare them for work directly after graduation or college level courses that provide them with experience and dual credit. To graduate, students must complete coursework in English language arts, mathematics, science, social studies, art/music, physical education, health, and Spanish. Students also have a variety of life skills and technology courses available to them with the goal of developing their 21st century learning skills.

Chalk Talk: How to Encourage Independence
We’ve all heard about “helicopter” parents, and many of us admit, we may hover a bit too much. It is difficult to adjust from feeding, clothing, and doing everything for your little one, to standing back and watching our older children strive for independence. While it’s important to keep our children safe, it is equally important to provide them with opportunities to be autonomous and self-sufficient. To ensure you are giving your child a chance to flourish, here are some age-appropriate milestones they should be able to do on their own (barring any developmental delays). Older toddlers should be able to dress themselves, and put clean clothes in their drawers and dirty in a hamper (you may need to help them distinguish between the two, as well as help with buttons, zippers, and shoelaces). Preschool-aged children should be able to match up their socks, and young elementary-aged children should be able to do some folding. By fourth or fifth grade, students should be able to wash their own clothing. Finally, give kids of all ages a chance to clean and tidy up.
