Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Antigo District Curriculum

Elementary school science students participate in a curriculum that guides them through an exploration of physical science. Students learn about various earth materials and their properties. The difference between solids, liquids, and gasses is discussed, as are form, temperature, and color. Using these properties, learners develop the ability to classify different materials. Basic concepts related to motion are explored as well. Learners identify characteristics of an object that is in motion and use appropriate terms to describe how that object is in motion. Other essential physical science concepts introduced in elementary school are temperature, electricity, magnetism, and sound.

As part of the personal financial literacy curriculum in Antigo, middle school students acquire a deeper understanding of responsible use of credit. Learners explore various sources of credit and analyze the pros and cons of each. Students determine the real cost of borrowing by calculating interest, compound interest, and amortization. Interest rates, fees, and other charges associated with buying on credit are examined as well. Middle school students also learn about credit worthiness, and the role that one’s credit score plays in making that determination.

Chalk Talk: Three Reasons Why Technology in Education Is Important

Teaching and learning is much different today than it was even a decade ago. With an explosion of technologies that can promote learning, classrooms are becoming ever more plugged in. These technologies are vital to education for a variety of reasons. First, technology expands the space and time in which students can learn. No longer tied to the class period, students can now access their textbooks, assignments, and other learning materials via the Internet. Second, technology allows kids to take a more active role in their learning. As opposed to being taught to, students today can take the lead and explore, examine, and evaluate information on their own. Lastly, technology is an integral component of society and the workforce. By inserting technologies into education, students are able to gain skills that translate into valuable preparation for life and work in the modern world.
