The De Soto Independent School District curriculum is based on the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills. Unique partnerships with community businesses and organizations provide further learning opportunities for students outside of the classroom. These real-world experiences allow learners to apply their knowledge and skills to solve real-world problems. As a result, students develop a strong skill set that will allow them to be successful in college or career. With services that promote social and emotional growth, the district is able to address the needs of the whole child. Additionally, clubs that focus on business, environmentalism, languages, and forensics are among those available to students.

Geography is a part of the Social Studies curriculum. At Glenn Heights school geography helps the students become aware of the different cultures, lifestyles, countries and maps throughout the world. They discover how to use each of these and how to find similarities and differences. Students also identify how globalization is positively and negatively impacting the environment. By studying how various groups of people live throughout the world, they also discover how similar we all are. These concepts lay a strong foundation for their study in social science courses in college.

Chalk Talk: Gap Year Programs
The pressures and expectations that fall on teens’ shoulders become higher each year. Then the thought of continuing, or increasing, the pressure in college can become overwhelming. This has led many to consider taking a gap year between high school graduation and the first year of college. Gap year can encompass different things. For some students this may be a year of working to take some of the financial obligations of college off of the parent’s shoulders. Others may take this time to travel before settling down to college life. To pay for this many students work the summer after high school graduation to pay for traveling. Regardless of what the teen does with this year, the majority of students are ready to work and succeed at college the next year.
