Ham Lake District and Curriculum
Ham Lake’s K-12 students are served by the Anoka-Hennepin School District. The district is the largest in the state, with nearly 40,000 students attending one of 24 elementary schools, six middle schools, and five high schools. Anoka-Hennepin Schools takes great pride in the educational opportunities it provides to students. Each school building represents a state-of-the art learning space that is both safe and inviting for students. Curricula have been devised that challenge students to think critically and become adept at problem solving. Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Ham Lake District Curriculum
Elementary learners in Ham Lake are introduced to basic concepts in human interactions with earth systems as part of the science curriculum. Students develop an understanding of the difference between renewable and non-renewable sources of energy. The benefits and detriments of both energy sources are debated, with students also identifying the specific types of energies that are available in Minnesota. The processes used to extract natural resources are explored as well. Learners focus especially on the process of turning minerals into energy sources and identify the ways in which the properties of minerals are altered to make them more useful.
Ham Lake’s high school health sciences curriculum involves lessons that encourage the development of strong decision-making skills. Students work on acquiring effective interpersonal communication skills by role-playing real-life scenarios with their classmates. Students learn how to stand up for themselves and others, effectively communicate their needs, wants, or feelings, and learn refusal skills that help them deal with peer pressure. Conflict resolution strategies are also an important topic of study.

- Catch a Break Program Provides Scholarship Funding - Three students have received scholarships from the Catch a Break Program. The scholarships are valued at $10,000 per year for four years. This is a substantial portion of yearly tuition and underscores the value of school community partnerships that benefit local students.
- Champlin-Brooklyn Park Academy’s Kids Klub - Champlin-Brooklyn Park Academy’s Kids Klub pairs elementary students with mentors from Champlin Park High School. The students spend time together in activities that promote social, emotional, and academic development. Both mentor and mentee gain a lot of perspective from the experience, and older students are encouraged to volunteer for this program.
- Anoka-Hennepin School District Talent Development Program - The Talent Development Program is a way to recognize the unique talents within students and ensure that the district is providing the support and rigor that each child needs. Students who have special talents in the arts, science, technology, and athletics are all eligible for these services.

Keeping in contact with teachers, helping their children with homework, and creating a home environment that is supportive of education are just a few ways that parents can boost their child’s ability to succeed in school. Some parents may also be able to join district advisory committees and help to shape policy regarding local students educational experiences.
