Ipswich District and Curriculum

Ipswich Public Schools are comprised of four schools and almost 2,000 students. The district’s superintendent is highly committed to communicating with parents, regularly updating notes and a blog. Ipswich teachers have websites that update parents on curricular information and what is going on in the classroom. The Doyon School, which contains students in grades K-5, has begun a unique program that makes science more authentic and hands-on. The district has hired a teacher and naturalist from a nearby wildlife sanctuary to plan on-site outdoor field trips. Academic programming in the district is top-notch as well, with students at each grade level challenged to meet their educational goals and aspire to be lifelong learners.

We currently cover the following Ipswich-area school district: Ipswich Public Schools.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Ipswich District Curriculum

Teachers discuss areas of the science curriculum that need to be focused on, and field trips are planned around them. The naturalist then guides the students through outdoor activities such as gathering objects that could become soil and talking about how, eventually, these objects decompose and weather, becoming soil. The roles of testing and evaluation in the scientific process are identified as well so that students become familiar with how scientists come to hypotheses, test and validate them, and present their findings.

In Language Arts, students are introduced to literature that includes short stories and longer fiction, one- and multi-act plays; poetry that includes lyrical poems and sonnets; and literary nonfiction such as exposition pieces, personal essays, opinion pieces, memoirs, and journalism. The interaction of people, places, and events is also explored, with learners analyzing how ideas influence people, people influence events, and the like. They develop different analytic skills to apply to fiction and non-fiction as well as how to properly incorporate and cite the works of others in their own written work and in classroom discussions.

Keeping Informed: Recent Ipswich Educational News

  • Ipswich High Students Portray Anne Frank - The Company of Ipswich High School recently performed “The Diary of Anne Frank.” It was a challenge for the cast, who are around the same age as Anne Frank was during the Holocaust, to portray such a tragic situation. The director tried to convey to the young actors that, even though there was no happy ending for Anne Frank, so many inspirational stories and people emerged from the Holocaust.
  • Ipswich Students Are Friends of Kpelezo - Ipswich High’s group the Friends of Kpelezo recently held its third annual 5K run to benefit children from a small village in Ghana. The funds would be used to sponsor three students who otherwise would not be able to attend school due to the high costs of high schools in Ghana and the far travel. Additionally, a group of volunteers from Ipswich traveled to the village to help build a new school there.
  • Doyon Classes Take It Outside - The Doyon School has scheduled several outdoor science classes for students. In this “Naturalist and Residency Program,” a teacher and naturalist at a nearby wildlife sanctuary comes to the school to take the students on on-site “field trips” during which the learning is based on specific science curriculum topics and standards as requested by the science teachers. Through hands-on activities, students are able to conduct observations; make predictions; collect, record, and organize data; and share their findings.

Chalk Talk: How to Focus Better

In order to focus solely on this assignment, it is essential to provide yourself with a distraction-free environment. Put your phone away, do not listen to music (or at least music you want to sing to), and keep pop-ups on your computer at bay. If you are not working on a computer, try to complete a project away from other people and objects that will pull your attention away from your goal. Timing is everything. If you can wake up and perform your tasks first thing in the morning that is probably best. Working as soon as you get home from work or school may also prove beneficial. Also, don’t get hung up on the parts you can’t do now or answers you do not know. Proceed and put the difficult aspects of a job aside until you do have time to get the answers.
