Weston District and Curriculum
Weston Public Schools contain five schools and 2,200 students. The district also is home to an integrated preschool, which prides itself on serving children with special needs from the age of three. Finally, since 1969, Weston has participated in the METCO program, which buses minority students from Boston to suburban schools. Weston Public Schools have devised a framework that outlines the district’s instructional decision making process. The standards, “big ideas,” and learning goals are at the top of the food chain, as they drive the instructional planning, which shapes the teaching and the learning.
We currently cover the following Weston-area school district: Weston Public Schools.
Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Weston District Curriculum
For each grade level and content area, there is a curriculum guide that breaks down the “big ideas,” learning goals (the skills and knowledge students are expected to gain), instructional snapshots (the activities that one may see taking place in the classroom), and assessment tools for each standard. These curriculum guides are included for art, social studies, English, math, world languages, music, health and physical education, technology, science, and guidance. Teachers are able to use a variety of instructional methods to impart the skills and learning objectives.
After the objective-based teaching takes place, the teacher engages in reflection on the strengths and weaknesses of the instruction in relation to the standards, big ideas, and learning goals. Similarly, after the learning occurs, students engage in assessment, which centers on and gauges how well students met the standards and learning goals. Student assessments are used to understand how each student is doing and how well the teacher is addressing each topic for all the students in the class.

Chalk Talk: Why It's Hard to Be a New Teacher
Being a new, first-year teacher is a quite a bit more difficult than people often realize. Although teachers gain a ton of real-life experience while student teaching, they also typically receive a lot of help from their cooperating teacher. Although student teachers create most of their own lessons and activities, they receive guidance from an experienced teacher with regards to what needs to be taught based on the curriculum. First-year teachers are on their own and have to create all of their lessons and materials from scratch. They will have to thoroughly study all of the standards and curriculum benchmarks and design materials that match them. This means that they will likely spend countless hours outside of school on designing their lessons. Teachers will also have to deal with classroom management all on their own and will have most of the say on how discipline will be handled in their classroom. Although this freedom sounds nice, classroom management is one of the most challenging aspects of teaching. Teachers also have the sometimes tough job of communicating with parents.
