The TEKS contains the frameworks for core academics as well as Career Development, Fine Arts, Economics and other subjects that connect students with their post-secondary goals. The standards describe the responsibilities of the schools to the students as well as the academic responsibilities the students are expected to live up to. Proficiency standards have been established to ensure that students are achieving the goals that have been established. Activities to prepare learners for college and career are integrated throughout the curriculum.

We currently cover the following Jacinto City-area school districts: Galena Park Independent School District and Houston Independent School District.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Jacinto City District Curriculum

One part of the curriculum at Jacinto City school is history. The educators use a variety of resources to make history come to life for the students. Whether it is literature, newspapers, films or primary sources, the students become aware of the people and events that make up this subject. They also take the information from these sources to then research a person well enough to debate an issue from that historical person's viewpoint. When they enter their career of choice, these students will be aware of the difference one person can make in history.

The science curriculum in both districts includes the subjects of earth and space science, environmental science, biology, physics and chemistry. Students are taught to use evidence to construct verifiable explanations to natural phenomenon and how to communicate their scientific discoveries. They learn how to distinguish between hypotheses and theories and how to evaluate and construct models, make inferences, and predict trends from scientific data. They learn the proper methods to perform calculations and use scientific notation in their work.

Chalk Talk: Culture and Education

Culture has a bit impact on how children learn. There are some cultures that believe that working with other students is cheating while others see it as a way to give or receive assistance. There are places where it is believed that children should be quiet during the school day and eye contact should be avoided. Another cultural belief is that all material should be considered communal while others believe that items belong to the individual. The differences in cultural history and ideologies need to be considered in the classroom and if children get together to study at home so they can obtain knowledge in a way that is suitable to them. Understanding these differences, and bringing them into the classroom, can help expose children to the different ways that societies function around the world.
