Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Alexandria District Curriculum

To develop the skills necessary to effectively read informational texts, Alexandria’s high school students take part in a comprehensive English language arts curriculum. Students learn how to critically analyze an informational text to evaluate the effectiveness of the manner in which it is structured. Learners examine texts to determine the author’s point of view and identify the stylistic and content choices he or she makes to make their point. Integration from various resources is also a skill students acquire.

The Alexandria health sciences curriculum was designed to help middle school students develop essential decision-making skills. Learners utilize a decision tree to work through real-life problems. After identifying the healthiest solution, students reflect upon their decision and explain how their choice will enhance their overall wellbeing. Working with classmates, learners also tackle an issue choice that impacts their school. Teams of students use the decision-making process to assess what is currently being done about the issue.

Chalk Talk: Benefits of Career Education

Many high schools offer career education courses that introduce students to a variety of career areas. Students can participate in welding, auto mechanics, and culinary arts, to name a few. These courses offer students many benefits, not the least of which is an opportunity to learn about a specific career while still in high school. Often, students find a career area that speaks to them and helps inform how they proceed with their education. Career education courses often involve experiential learning as well. This means that students are actively engaged in class, learning new skills, and problem solving in real world situations. Students that participate in these courses often make connections with local businesses, organizations, and trade schools, which furthers their ability to continue their career studies after high school.
