Southborough District and Curriculum
The Public Schools of Northborough and Southborough uses a rigorous curriculum that engages student in critical thinking in all subject areas. The Common Core Standards are the basis for learning in Math and Language Arts, and Massachusetts Content Frameworks are used to detail the standards of other academic subjects. Each curriculum breaks down the subject according to its main topics and then builds student ability beginning with the basics and advancing to more complex, analytic work as the years go on. Students of all abilities and ages are expected to put in the work and effort to improve themselves and are challenged each day to learn new skills.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Southborough District Curriculum
The main goal of the high school’s English language arts department is to develop confident readers and writers by implementing a writing process that includes peer review and revision as well as basing reading on reader response theory. The school offers more generalized courses to underclassmen, but juniors and seniors have the opportunity to take classes focused on more specific topics, such as Creative Writing and Dramatic Literature. A course on the writer’s workshop is also offered.
The social studies department has keyed in on ten themes that courses are built around, with each containing essential questions; there is list of which themes are addressed in which courses. The themes are communication, conflict, economy, geography, identity, leadership, power, revolution, rights and responsibility, and technology. Evaluating information for bias is critical to the curriculum as well. Students identify possible biases in informational texts and use that insight to determine what is true or false.

- Algonquin Seniors Showcase Their School Before Leaving It - Three Algonquin Regional High seniors recently created the "Showcasing Algonquin" video to highlight the school's "building a champion" mantra and share the vision of Principal Tom Mead. The video was created as a part of the students' Business Research and Applications course and was the video the students submitted to take part in the Massachusetts State Career Development Conference DECA competition.
- District Considers Later Start Times for High School - Northborough-Southborough Public Schools has formed a study group that will investigate the need for later start times for the high school. This comes on the heels of parents organizing a study on students’ sleep needs and urging the pushing back the start time for Algonquin Regional High. The district has joined other school districts around the nation who became interested in this topic after the American Academy of Pediatrics emphasized the importance of middle and high school students getting enough sleep and recommending that schools start after 8:30.
- School Officials from China Tour Algonquin - A group of headmasters from schools in China visited Algonquin Regional High during an international tour of schools. The Chinese leaders wanted to learn about and observe leadership techniques, A.P. coursework, and class schedules in order to bring ideas back to schools in China. They were able to see innovative practices through video-based learning, robotics, and the use of iPads in the classroom. The Chinese officials also were interested in the elective courses and the less lecture-based nature of classes, as schools in their country lack these features.

Chalk Talk: What Is Academic Vocabulary?
Academic vocabulary is becoming increasingly important in education, as the Common Core Standards call for substantial use of informational texts. This type of vocabulary can be difficult to learn, as it is found in academic texts and dialogue but not so much in the everyday conversations students encounter. Academic vocabulary can also be content-specific; for example, "molecule" is an academic vocabulary term within the discipline of science; molecules may be talked about in science classes and texts and among scientists, but one would be unlikely to talk or hear about molecules in informal discussions. Academic vocabulary terms may be better learned by activities that require students to list some information about each word, including the meaning (in the student's words), the part of speech, synonyms, a sentence using and providing context for the word, and an association (words or illustrations the student thinks of when he/she hears the word and will help him/her remember its meaning). This method will likely work better than the typical one of having students copy glossary definitions and use each word in a sentence.
