Templeton District and Curriculum

The Narragansett Regional School District serves students in the towns of Templeton, Baldwinville, and Phillipston. The district strives to connect curriculum, instruction, and learning as a continuous cycle and does so on the basis of five essential questions: “What do we want our students to know?” “Are we using the best instructional methods?” “How will we know when they have learned it?” “What will we do if they haven’t learned it?” “What will we do if they already know it?” District programming further promotes student success by offering a multitude of opportunities for growth, including classroom learning, extracurricular activities, sports, and clubs.

We currently cover the following Templeton-area school district: Narragansett Regional School District.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Templeton District Curriculum

In the elementary and intermediate years, each teacher has his/her own webpage, and all the teachers have a webpage as a team. One of these is a page dedicated to the grade-level curriculum, which includes links to the Common Core Standards for English Language Arts, the Common Core Standards Curriculum-related information for Narragansett Regional for History and the Social Sciences, the Massachusetts Math Standards, the Massachusetts Science and Technology Standards.

The high school curriculum increases the breadth and depth of learning opportunities. There are more career-oriented electives and students are expected to take increasing ownership of their work. College and career skills like independent investigation, critical thinking, and collaboration skills are also emphasized. The Advanced Placement options allow students to engage with college-level curriculum and they have the opportunity to earn college credit upon successful passage of the end of year AP exam.

Chalk Talk: Social Studies Electives

While students are generally required to take a combination of history courses their first three years of high school, they typically do not have to take any social studies classes during their senior year. However, the senior year is freed up to take one or more of the several social studies elective courses high schools may offer. The most common of these electives is psychology—the study of the mind and human behavior. Colleges usually offer many types and levels of psychology, and it is a very popular major and minor. Psychology concepts include dream theory, functions of different parts of the brain as well as each part of the nervous system, personality, social processes, psychological disorders and treatments. Another very popular social studies elective is economics, which relates to the production and consumption of resources. Other social studies classes include sociology (the study of social behavior), political science (related to government systems and the analysis of political activity), and anthropology (the study of humans—both past and present).
