Millis District and Curriculum
Millis Public Schools contains three schools and over 1,400 students. Millis Public Schools has created curriculum brochures for each grade level (elementary school) or content area (secondary grade levels). The curriculum brochures for the elementary level describe the skills and knowledge students are expected to gain by the end of the school year in English language arts and math. Students gain academic knowledge and tools, but also develop social, emotional, and behavioral competencies that will serve them throughout their lives. They also acquire strong collaboration and communication skills that are so important for success in the modern world.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Millis District Curriculum
The expectations for math are broken down into topics such as operations and algebraic thinking, measurement and data, geometry, and number and operations in base 10. They also define the universal Standards for Mathematical Practice, which list the steps for students to be effective problem solvers. The curriculum brochures for the secondary grade levels break down the essential understandings by grade level (middle and high school are separate). Some of these brochures are divided by courses and include a description of the department’s philosophy.
The district incorporates blended learning, which allows students to learn in the classroom while also having access to classroom materials away from school through online tools such as Blackboard and Moodle. This model supports project- and problem-based learning, the enhancement of the curriculum, electronic assessment of student work, online collaboration, organization and study skills, a self-directed learning approach, students with special needs, and the personalization of student learning.

Keeping Informed: Recent Millis Educational News
- Millis High's Girls' Basketball Team Visits State House - After winning the Division Four State Championships for the second consecutive year, the Millis High girls' basketball team was invited to the Massachusetts State House. The girls and their coach were welcomed by Senator Richard J. Ross and Representatives David Linsky and Shawn Dooley. The group took a tour of the building and was introduced on the House floor.
- Scholarship for Millis Seniors - The Millis Lions Club offers the Warren Jordan Scholarship, which is both needs- and merit-based, to graduating seniors who reside in Millis. Requirements include applicants attending an accredited four-year university and writing an essay on how they have served others.
- Millis High Valedictorian and Salutatorian Excited for Opportunity - The Millis High valedictorian and salutatorian were interviewed shortly after their graduation from Millis High. The girls, who are close friends, were first extremely happy for and proud of each other when they received their distinctions. They were excited and honored to represent their school with their titles and thanked their families and friends for helping them get there. Both of the girls are very interested in music.

Chalk Talk: English Class in High School
High school students are required to take four years of English, which is usually some combination of American and World Literature courses. Students will read grade-appropriate novels, poetry, and other works; this includes Shakespearean works. They will read works of various genres and should be able to critically analyze the pieces they read. Also, they will frequently respond to texts in writing. They will also write their own works, including poetry, as well as research papers. The research process is important in high school English, as students learn to properly cite sources, evaluate the relevance and legitimacy of the sources they locate, and put together an organized and cohesive research paper based on their findings. Students will also use other forms of digital media. Lastly, speaking and presenting will be a huge part of high school English. Students will have the opportunity to take AP and college-level English courses as well.
