Shirley District and Curriculum
The Ayer Shirley Regional School District provides students with a rigorous, comprehensive curriculum that was developed collaboratively by many teachers and professionals and was adopted by the Massachusetts Department of Education as the guidelines for subject area teaching and learning. Each subject sets out grade level expectations for students to meet and enables to teachers to use a range of instructional methods to accomplish the learning goals. Interdisciplinary and project-based work are emphasized so that students are developing 21st century learning skills and are prepared for college and career life.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Shirley District Curriculum
The district uses an Understanding by Design framework as the basis of its curriculum. This “backward design” model starts at the end of the unit—by determining what students are expected to understand at the end of the unit and working backward to develop activities and instruction from there. Devising a curriculum using this model involves three steps; first, the desired student outcomes need to be identified. Here, curriculum designers will determine the big ideas that will be addressed in the unit, the essential questions students must be able to answer by the conclusion of the unit, and the skills students need to acquire.
Ayer Shirley Regional High School offers several unique social studies elective courses, including Women’s Studies, Contemporary Social Problems, and Cold War America. Several of these classes suit students who have interest in various types of writing. The Creative Arts Workshop course centers on collaboration among artists, musicians, and poets. In Children’s Literature, students have the opportunity to read aloud to young children in local libraries and other facilities. - Ayer's Spaghetti Dinner Benefits Community - The 25th annual Ayer Community School spaghetti dinner that was recently held benefited the Ayer Shirley Regional School District and served as an event to get the community to come together. Attendees had the opportunity to socialize with people they hadn't seen for a while, including former students. The dinner, which sees all of its funds go to the school district, typically serves 300 to 500 meals each year.
- ASRHS Takes Silver - The U.S. News and World Report ranked Ayer Shirley Regional High School 76th among the 352 high schools in Massachusetts in terms of the AP opportunities it offers its students, earning the school a "silver medal" for 2015. This data shows that, at the school, AP courses are becoming a more popular choice among all students—not just honors students.
- Small Class 'Like a Family' - The 58 members of ASRHS's Class of 2015 first came together when they were in eighth grade and Ayer and Shirley combined into a regional district, and the group has grown into "our own family"—as the class salutatorian put it. She talked about how they had experienced so much together—through ups and downs—and grew together. “I care about you guys,” said the valedictorian.

Chalk Talk: The Importance of School Nutrition Programs
Students eat their lunch—and possibly breakfast—at school five days a week, so of course parents are concerned with what kind of food their child is served at school. Schools or districts have nutritionists who are responsible for creating daily menus with balanced meal options. Although cafeteria food used to consist of chicken nuggets, tater tots, pizza, and "mystery meat," with childhood obesity becoming a growing epidemic in the U.S., there has been a recent wave to provide students with healthier, fresher options. In fact, the school nutritionist must follow federal guidelines to ensure the menu he/she puts together is nutritious and balanced. Now, students may have choices such as salads and grilled chicken sandwiches. Menus usually contain two or three meal options, and sides may consist of fruits and vegetables. Other tasks for school or district nutritionists may include being in charge of the funding dedicated to nutrition and keeping track of which students are eligible for free or reduced-price lunch or breakfast.
