Warren District and Curriculum

Quaboag Regional School District serves students in the towns of Warren and West Brookfield. The schools use the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks, which incorporate Common Core Standards, and which ensures that students receive consistent and high quality learning standards in all subjects. The curriculum undergoes a continual revision process so that it is up to date and students are learning relevant content which is important in an increasingly globalized world. The high school curriculum prepares students for college and emphasizes the research and critical thinking strategies they will need to use in their college academics.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Warren District Curriculum

The Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks cover language arts, foreign languages, history and social science, Science, Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), and the arts. It provides broad objectives which local teachers interpret and turn into classroom learning experiences guided by the objective. These may include learning new skills, developing awareness of a concept, or critically thinking about a topic. Teachers are encouraged to relate the classroom learning to how it is used in the real world and give students chances to learn through projects and authentic assessments.

Quaboag Middle/High School’s teacher webpages help students and parents get a better understanding of their academics. For example, the English teacher posts separate links for homework, various units such as “Julius Caesar” and poetry, rubrics, and summer reading. Each link contains PowerPoint notes so that students can review the material and current assignments. Each math webpage is organized by class, such as algebra, pre-algebra, and honors algebra. Students can also communicate with their teachers through these pages.

Chalk Talk: A Guide to the Most Commonly Misspelled Words

Spell check doesn't always get it right, and students need to be prepared to check their word usage particularly with frequently confused words. You may not be able to hear it, but there is an A in "weather." Does "vacuum" have two C's or two U's or two of each (the answer is two U's)? "Twelfth" gets confused often since the word twelve is spelled with a V. I know you want to place a vowel somewhere in the end of the word "rhythm," but please resist the urge. The similar looking word "rhyme" is often spelled incorrectly as well--with an I instead of a Y. "Recommend" is another word in which students may question which consonants are doubled. One more: Although, playwrights do indeed write plays, the word is not spelled as "playwrite."
