Chalk Talk: Commonly Confused Words

It can be easy for students to mix up commonly confused words. "Passed" and "past" are often used incorrectly; the former is used as the past tense of the word pass, while the latter identifies something that has already happened. "Farther" is used to when talking about moving toward a greater distance, while "further" may be used when talking about an addition (i.e.: furthermore). "Weather" refers to the cold and the rain, and "whether" is another word for "if." One more: Students confuse "than" and "then" commonly. "Than" is used when referencing difference, and "then" is another word for "next." For example: "Jen's phone has more apps THAN Becca's does." "First, we went swimming in the water. THEN, we sat out in the sun to dry off."
