Educating Our Parents: Understanding the York District Curriculum
The York School District follows the Standards & Learning guidelines set out by the state Department of Education. These standards cover all academic programs, as well as courses in the arts, career learning, and advanced programs such as International Baccalaureate and Advanced Placement. The standards set out a scope and sequence for learning that develops students more advanced abilities in each subject. The learning standards also present a number of opportunities for critical thinking and individual inquiry.
The district’s programs and services include Montessori education for preschool students, Reading Recovery for students struggling with reading, a Graduation Enhancement Program, Gateway Technology, Culinary Arts, GreenSTEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math), the MERIT gifted program for students in grades 3-8, AP course offerings, dual credit course offerings, AIMS Math/Science Partnership, Manufacturing Operations Major. Chalk Talk: Commonly Confused Words
Students often mix up words that are commonly confused. They may use the words "herd" (i.e.: of cows) with "heard" (the past tense of the sense involving your ears). "Lead" and "led" is another set of homophones that may be mixed up; the latter is a type of metal, and the former is the past tense of the verb that means to guide the way. Another example of commonly confused words is "lightening" and "lightning." It is the second spelling that occurs during a thunderstorm; "lightening" means lessening the load of something. One more: Students may forget the meanings of "figuratively" and "literally," which are important terms to understand in literature. Figurative speech is not explicit and refers to metaphors, while literal speech is explicit and realistic. "Figuratively speaking, I am so hungry, I could eat an elephant!" "Sam literally laughed out loud when thinking about his favorite comedian's jokes."
