Hartsville District and Curriculum
Darlington County School District is a very large district serving over 10,900 students in Darlington County. The district is home to various magnet programs that allow students at all grade levels to pursue areas such as math, science, and technology; visual and performance arts; and honors college. Mayo High School for Math, Science and Technology is a total magnet school, as opposed to a magnet program within a school. Students are supported in their college and career goals and are able to receive individual support and guidance in achieving their goals. The district’s values include integrity, honesty, respect, trust, and accountability.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Hartsville District Curriculum
On the Darlington County School District website, the math department posts detailed pacing and curriculum guides that outline what students are expected to learn throughout the year. This is designed to help parents participate in their child’s math learning at home and to understand how their child is doing in meeting the standards. The math curriculum covers numeracy and operations, algebraic thinking, geometry and measurement, and probability and statistics. In high school, students may also take pre-calculus and calculus.
In English language arts at Darlington County, students are expected to read widely; analyze, evaluate, and discuss texts; and develop a love for and personal understanding through reading. Through reading, students need to develop independence, build strong knowledge of the content they are reading, comprehend and critique, value textual evidence, use digital media effectively and strategically, and understand different perspectives and cultures. They also are expected to learn how to incorporate and reference other author’s works into their own writing.

- Darlington County Given 'Excellent' Report Card - Darlington County School District was one of eleven districts in the state to receive an "Excellent" absolute rating by the SC Department of Education on its 2014 district report card--a designation it earned for the fourth consecutive year. Mayo High School for Math, Science and Technology and Lamar High earned academic achievement rankings of third and ninth, respectively, out of 236 South Carolina high schools; these two schools both had 100 percent graduation rates.
- Darlington High Students Get Mac Air Laptops - Three hundred Darling juniors and seniors received personal laptops thanks to a SC Department of Education technology grant and the district's student laptop project. Teachers and administrators had received professional development with regards to implementing the laptops for a year before they were issued to students. The district's Director of Technology emphasized that the benefits, which include the use of critical thinking skills, will come from HOW the laptops are integrated in the classroom to enhance instruction--not from on the devices themselves.
- Darlington Students Place Fourth at State BPA Conference - Two Darlington High students recently attended the 2015 Business Professionals of America (BPA) State Leadership Conference in Columbia, SC. The two students, who comprised the Professional Management Team, placed fourth at the competition. Students were able to compete individually or in teams in areas such as accounting, finance, desktop publishing, web design, software engineering and video production.

Chalk Talk: Commonly Confused Words
Students often mix up commonly confused words. Students may mistakenly use the word "marshall" to identify an officer in the U.S. Justice Department, but this term is always actually a proper noun (specifically, a name). The proper word to use is "marshal." "May be" is synonymous with "might be," while "maybe" as one word is used as an alternative to perhaps. Another example is "metal" and "mettle," with the former meaning a shiny, hard material such as silver and the latter meaning how well someone is able to deal with adversity. One more: "Mute" means without sound or speech, and "moot" is mostly used in the phrase "moot point"--something irrelevant.
