Chalk Talk: Goals of the Health Curriculum

The health curriculum centers in part on helping students develop strong interpersonal communication skills. Students participate in skits in which they demonstrate how to appropriately communicate with other people. Learners explore various strategies for expressing their emotions effectively, including using anger management techniques to ensure they can discuss their feelings in a calm and rational manner. Conflict resolution is also a primary area of focus. Students identify various means by which they can compromise with others to bring about an end to a conflict. Wellness and nutrition is also emphasized. Students review the various food groups and identify how much of each type of food they should intake each day. Learners also develop an understanding of what foods they should avoid, and explore what those foods can do to negatively impact their health.
