Commerce District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs

The Commerce Independent School District use the TEKS, Texas Essential Skills and Knowledge, curriculum in all of their schools. The curriculum is standards-based and uses the same topics to deepen students understanding of the subject each year. The topics include numbers and operations, algebraic relationships, shapes and measurements, and probabilities and data in Math and the grade-level expectations represent what students should master each year. This framework helps students build upon prior knowledge which they can also use as a basis for critical reflection, which supports the goal of teaching students to think critically.

We currently cover the following Commerce-area school district: Commerce Independent School District.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Commerce District Curriculum

The Math curriculum was developed to introduce students to numbers and operations, proportionality, expressions, equations, and relationships, measurement and data, and personal financial literacy. In financial literacy, students explore the importance of establishing credit and maintaining good credit in order to make financial goals more attainable. Basic investment terminology is introduced as well, including stocks, bonds, CDs, money market accounts, and the like. There is an analysis of credit and debt issues as well.

The Science curriculum calls upon students to understand scientific investigations and reasoning and be able to work through the processes of testing and proving hypotheses. During middle school, topics studied include matter and energy, force, motion, and energy, earth and space, and organisms and environments. They learn about interdependence and how these systems work together. In high school, full year courses in these topics as well as engineering, integrated physics and chemistry, and other advanced options are available.

Chalk Talk: Reading Fluency

When it comes to becoming a good reader, children need to be able to do more than sound out words and read a sentence. A fluent reader is someone that can read with comprehension, confidence and timing. Parents can help their child by demonstrating fluent reading by reading out loud, with an expressive voice, to the child. Parents also need to allow the child enough time to practice this skill. The more they practice the sooner this will become a natural part of a child’s reading. While the child reads, parents can see how the child does with accuracy, tone, emphasis and emotion. This will give them a benchmark from which to grow. Along with this parents can make reading fun by working fun activities in with the reading. Perhaps the child would like to direct a production of the story, or they could create a news story from the book.
