Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Chester District Curriculum

Chester County School District places great emphasis on the use of innovative teaching in its classrooms. The Chester Park Complex gives parents a choice of three elementary schools to select for their children based on their individual needs and interests. The School of Arts incorporates music and art into the core content areas. The School of Inquiry focuses on students learning content through hands-on activities. Lastly, the Center of Learning through Technology (COLT) specializes in integrating technology into the main content areas.

The Chester County Career Center offers an engineering and design program that prepares students for work in the competitive high-tech industry. Introductory engineering courses include design work, drafting, and designing 3-D products. The program functions similarly to a college-level program in which students begin by taking prerequisites and advance to focusing on specific fields of engineering, such as mechanical, civil, or architectural engineering. Thanks to a recent grant worth $5,000 from PPG Industries, the Career Center now offers the “Project Lead the Way” and Mechatronics programs, which focus on automated manufacturing and hydraulics.

Chalk Talk: Spotlight on Chapter Books for Kids

Once students reach the upper elementary grades and have acquired the majority of the fundamental reading skills they need, they begin to read chapter books. One of the most popular of these chapter books is Holes, written by Louis Sachar. One of the great aspects of this book is that it allows and requires readers to make many textual connections throughout the story. Holes contains interdisciplinary themes and is conducive to being used in social studies and science lessons. The novel addresses many themes, including friendship and racism. Another popular young adult novel is The Giver—written by Lowis Lowry—which gives readers a glimpse into a “Utopian” world. The book allows readers to appreciate the simple things in life, such as colors, and to hopefully value—instead of shun— differences among individuals. Lastly, Sharon G. Flake wrote a powerful novel entailed The Skin I’m In. As the title states, the book teaches adolescents to feel comfortable in their own skin.
