Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Mount Pleasant District Curriculum

The Iowa Core literacy standards aim to cultivate students who are college- and career-ready in the areas of reading, writing, listening, and speaking. This means that they demonstrate independence in these areas, read and listen purposefully and intently to build strong content knowledge, have the ability to respond to various audiences and purposes, both comprehend and critique, effectively and strategically utilize digital media, and gain understanding of multiple cultures and perspectives.

The standards describe reading in terms of the text complexity at which they read and their growth of comprehension; writing as the type of texts students write, their response to reading, and research; speaking and listening in terms of flexibility in communicating and collaborating; and language as conventions, vocabulary, and effective use. The English language arts standards also focus on how literacy is incorporated in content areas such as history and social studies, science, and the technical subjects.

Chalk Talk: Counting Through Stories

Children’s books can be a great tool to help youngsters learn to count. “The Baker’s Dozen” allows them to count to 13 using different types of desserts, as they learn that a baker’s dozen is equal to thirteen. The book, which includes a great deal of rhyming as well, also offers a review of the numbers from one to thirteen—including pictures. For sports fans, “Hat Trick’s Count: A Hockey Number Book” takes children through numbers one through nine and ten to 100 counting by tens with a hockey twist. The book also has rhyming and includes life-like illustrations. Lastly, in “Magnus Maximus, a Marvelous Measurer”, Magnus Maximus counts and measures extraordinary things. He became the town’s official measurer. He counted and measured everything and eventually forgot about everything else in life. One day, he lost his glasses and had to wait a day to get a new pair, so he could not count anything. He went to the beach, and little boy named Michael wanted to paddle with him in the water. Eventually, he learned that counting and measuring should not dominate his life.
